چکیده

This work attempts to enhance telepresence by empowering nonverbal communication i.e. head gestures communication with an implementation of a robotic rear-projection head device. The feature of this implementation which is considered to be novel is the containment of all the necessary components for rear-head projection within the volume of a typical human head. This provides a natural look to the rear-projection head and facilitates interaction. The resultant head is capable of accurately projecting human facial features.

Requirements and Design Considerations for a Fully Immersive Robotic Telepresence System

In an ideal robotic telepresence system the visitor would perceive and be perceived as being fully present at a remote location. This can happen if the visitor has a first person experience of the destination location including full sensory stimulation, and if the people at the remote location would be able to naturally perceive and interact with the visitor as a regular human being. In this pa...

On the Effect of Operator Modality on Social and Spatial Presence during Teleoperation of a Human-Like Robot

With an increasing availability of affordable and effective robotic telepresence systems, key questions in the design of such systems arise, in particular when they aim at untrained users. Previous research regarding telepresence systems has focused on the (mobile) robotic platforms themselves or the differences between virtual as compared to physical representations thereof. The design space o...

Design considerations for mobile robotic telepresence in museums- A report on the pilot users’ feedbacks

The current paper is a user-centered study that intends to evaluate the usability of MRP (mobile robotic telepresence) systems inside museums from pilot users’ perspective by obtaining feedbacks from users who deploy a MRP system to visit a museum. The main aim of this study is to provide some guidelines which might contribute greatly to design and development of future telepresence robots that...

Optimal Trajectory Generation for a Robotic Worm via Parameterization by B-Spline Curves

In this paper we intend to generate some set of optimal trajectories according to the number of control points has been applied for parameterizing those using B-spline curves. The trajectories are used to generate an optimal locomotion gait in a crawling worm-like robot. Due to gait design considerations it is desired to minimize the required torques in a cycle of gait. Similar to caterpillars,...

Foveated Stereo Video Compression for Visual Telepresence

This thesis focuses on the design of a foveated stereo video compression algorithm for visual telepresence applications. In a typical telepresence application, a user at the local site views real-time stereo video recorded and transmitted from a robotic camera platform located at a remote site. The robotic camera platform tracks the user’s head motion producing the sensation of being present at...
